Questions, answered
A few things owners usually want to know before their dog's first visit. If yours isn't here, just ask.
What should I expect when I arrive?+
Before entering the building, please take a moment to let your dog relieve themselves, especially if they will be participating in a swim session. When you arrive, you and your dog will be warmly welcomed and shown to a comfortable seating area to complete any paperwork that has not already been filled out online. This gives your therapist a chance to get to know your dog and allows your dog time to settle into the new environment. A new space can sometimes feel a little overwhelming for dogs, so we strive to create a calm and relaxing experience. To help reduce stress and distractions, there is generally only one dog in the building at a time.
What if my dog has never been swimming before?+
This is completely ok! Many dogs are new to swimming when they first visit. Each dog is introduced to the water slowly and at their own comfort level in a calm, supportive environment. On their first swim consultation, a life jacket will be used for safety and to give your dog a little extra support and security. Some dogs jump right in after a toy they picked out from the basket, while others need a little extra time.
Can I stay with my dog during their swim or massage session?+
Absolutely! You are welcome to stay with your dog during their session. Some dogs appreciate a little extra reassurance, especially during their first massage. A familiar voice or gentle ear rub can help them relax. While owners are not allowed in the pool, we typically recommend standing at the end of the pool when your dog enters so they can easily see you and feel comfortable while they experience their first swim session.
Is the pool heated?+
Yes — the temperature ranges from 82 to 87 degrees. Warmer water promotes muscle relaxation and soothes sore joints.
What are your pool policies?+
To help keep all dogs safe and comfortable, please avoid feeding your dog 2-3 hours before their swim session and have them use the potty area prior to entering the pool. Brushing your dog before arrival is appreciated and helps protect water quality and pool filters. For safety reasons, individuals under 18 years of age are not permitted on the ramp, deck, or in the pool area. If your dog is ill, has diarrhea or loose stool, open wounds or is showing any signs of illness, please reschedule your appointment. Puppies are welcome to swim once they are at least 12 weeks old and have completed their age-appropriate vaccinations. If your dog has an accident in the pool, a cleaning fee may be assessed, as the pool may need to be closed for the remainder of the day to maintain proper sanitation and safety standards.
What do I need to bring?+
If your dog is coming for a swim session, there is no need to bring a towel — we will provide one for you. If your dog is attending a Silver Paws Sensory Stroll and has food sensitivities, please feel free to bring their favorite treats. We will also have a selection of treats available, including limited-ingredient options.
How many dogs can I bring to swim?+
For an initial swim consultation, you may bring up to two dogs from the same household, and the second dog's consultation is 50% off. Once your dogs have completed their swim assessment and are comfortable swimming independently, you may be approved to bring up to three dogs from the same household for future swim sessions. The number of dogs permitted in a session is based on each dog's swimming ability, confidence level, and whether additional support is needed to ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.
Where do I start?+
Every dog is different, and we're here to help guide you to the best fit for your pup. Some dogs may benefit from swimming first to burn off a little extra energy and build confidence in the water. Senior dogs or dogs with stiffness and soreness may feel more comfortable starting with a gentle warm swim to help loosen tired muscles and joints. Many dogs also enjoy combining a swim session with a massage after. We can help you determine what may be best for your dog. If your dog is new to the facility and you are interested in swimming only, your first visit will be booked as a New Swim Consultation. A life jacket will be used while we learn what makes your dog feel more comfortable.
Do I need a referral from my vet or vaccination history?+
While a veterinary referral is not required for recreational swim sessions, if your dog has a medical condition, a diagnosis of heart disease or murmur, recent injury or health concerns, swimming may not be appropriate. We strongly recommend consulting with your veterinarian to ensure swimming is a safe and beneficial activity for your dog. Proof of rabies and distemper vaccine is required before your dog's first visit. We also strongly recommend that dogs be current on their Bordetella vaccination. While we generally schedule only one household at a time, Bordetella helps provide an additional layer of protection when visiting any dog-friendly facility. Puppies are welcome after 12 weeks of age and once they have completed their age-appropriate vaccinations. For the health and safety of all guests, dogs showing signs of contagious illness will not be permitted to participate.
Is my dog too old for this?+
Senior dogs are some of our favorite clients. Warm water and gentle massage are often exactly what an aging body needs. The Silver Paws Sensory Stroll was designed specifically for dogs who need low-impact movement.
How often should we come?+
It depends on your goals. Conditioning and weight management often means weekly swims, while post-surgical or arthritis support may start more frequently and taper. We'll recommend a rhythm after the first session.
What if my dog is anxious or reactive?+
Let us know when you book. Sessions are private and one-on-one, and we can go as slowly as needed — sometimes a first visit is nothing more than getting comfortable in the space.
